Sophie Chatel submits questions on proposed Chalk River waste site

14 April 2022 à 12:00 am

Pontiac MP Sophie Chatel has filed a request to intervene regarding Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ application to amend the Chalk River Laboratories operating license to authorize the construction of a “near surface disposal facility” for low level waste.

She begins the document by specifying that she would like to intervene on environmental and safety issues as well as the consultation process.

In the document’s summary, Chatel lists 20 questions and concerns about the site, from the radioactivity of the waste in the mound to the oversight of the project once it’s completed. She also questions whether Canada’s standards are “as robust” as international standards.

The next phase of the public hearing on the change to the operating license is scheduled to start on May 31. More details can be found on the CNSC’s website.
